Saint Theresa Catholic Church

Welcome to St. Theresa Catholic Church!

St. Theresa Catholic Church, of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Texas was formed on October 1, 1946 after Miss Mary McBride of McBride Lane gave four acres of a six-acre tract as a gift. However, drainage and relocation of oil and gas pipelines on the six-acre site made it necessary to return it to the generous donor. Members of another pioneer family - Misses Alice, Katie, and Helen Dunn - offered as a gift to the church a 12.31-acre tract to build St. Theresa Church.

St. Theresa's Parish was created on April 13, 1947 with 50 families. During the first year, services were held in the Corpus Christi College Academy: first in the chapel; then in St. Benedict's Hall; and, finally in St. Placid's Hall until the new church was ready for use. The school was built with one wing reserved for the church until enough money was raised to build a suitable church. The old John Dunn residence, built in 1852, served as the rectory. Dedication of the new plant - Church, School, and Convent - took place on July 7, 1949 with Bishop Mariano S. Garriga officiating, assisted by pastor, Rev. Thomas Buergler, O.S.B. The cost of this beautiful, up-to-date plant amounted to $133,612 without furnishings.

The school was opened under the direction of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament in September 1949. There were 120 pupils enrolled that year. The school subsequently closed in the early 1990's. (St. Theresa Catholic Church directory 2007 - 2008)

Today, St. Theresa's Parish is comprised of approximatley 300 registered families, including members of St. Michael the Archangel Latin Mass Community. St. Michael's Community moved from its temporary home (Mount Carmel Home Chapel) and merged with St. Theresa's Parish in August 2012 under the administration of Fr. Donald D. Downey, JCL. Fr. Don celebrated Holy Mass in Latin (the Forma Extraordinaria ) at St. Theresa's on Thursday, August 2, 2012.

On July 2, 2012, St. Theresa's Parish welcomed Stephen Nolte, the Parish's newest deacon. Deacon Nolte serves with Fr. Don in the New Rite of Mass. In addition, Deacon Nolte is Director of Office of Family Life, as well as Director of Office of Life, Justice and Human Dignity for the Diocese of Corpus Christi.
